SemiAnalysis has presented a model of China’s data center market in which analysts matched more than 1 000 facilities with over 60 operators. The publication describes the infrastructure by buildings, tenants, and construction timelines, rather than relying solely on the public reporting of the largest companies. These figures are the research group’s own estimates, not an official government census.
What the model shows
According to SemiAnalysis’s calculations, ByteDance accounts for roughly one-fifth of China’s already commissioned data center capacity and leases almost all of it. This concentration makes the company a major customer of commercial data center operators, although ByteDance itself does not publish comparable reporting on its data centers.
The authors also note that public operators GDS and VNET reflect only part of the market’s deals. Their model estimates that these two companies accounted for about one-third of ByteDance’s and Alibaba’s orders during the period from 2024 through the first half of 2026. Therefore, data from the two well-known publicly traded operators do not provide a complete picture of demand for capacity.
Construction speed and the shift of computing capacity to the west
According to SemiAnalysis, large 100 MW sites in China can be commissioned in roughly a year, while some modular projects can be completed faster. The report attributes this to the availability of land and power, the scale of construction, and the government’s “East Data, West Computing” policy, which directs part of the infrastructure to the country’s western regions.
For international companies, this is important context: the growth of AI capabilities depends on servers, energy, and networks, not just on model architecture. However, the estimate cited does not confirm the rumor of a specific ByteDance model with 10 trillion parameters. Data center capacity alone cannot establish either the model’s size or its training plans.
How to read the figures
SemiAnalysis’s public overview contains summary benchmarks, while the detailed model is sold as a separate product. Readers should therefore distinguish between facilities confirmed by operators, tenant attribution, and estimates of capacity still under construction. The forecast through the end of 2026 is also not the same as capacity already commissioned.
A brief overview of the coverage and methodology is published on the pages of the China market overview and the China Datacenter Model.
